Red-Bellied Woodpecker - Buxton Backyard

I think that if your patient enough, everything will eventually come to you.

The other morning I was getting ready for work and stopped to peer out the back window and saw a flash of orangy-red on the suet of the feeder near the woodline. I paused, what the.... then I realized - it was a red bellied woodpecker. I hadn't seen one here since about 4 years ago when one stopped by for about 2 minutes. I watched him until I had to get moving and figured great - that's it. I've only seen two in the past - one in Cape Elizabeth by total accident and the one in my back yard years ago.

He's been here the past four mornings in a row.

Such a handsome creature to see hanging out in my back yard

That red!

"He's not that handsome - red is so over-rated. Seriously, have you seen how yellow I can get?"

Did you fill those all just for me? You did, didn't you?

If you think that's all for you....

Good grief, can't make a joke around here

I'm sorry ah'ight?

Yeah I guess so

You want me to come over there and straighten you two out?

Jeez lady - thanks for the seeds, didn't mean to start anything

You believe him?

You don't do you?

One last view of fall - Portland, Maine

This fall was extraordinarily vibrant, yellows so yellow - oranges so orange - reds so vivid - browns so, you get it. This is the tree right outside my office window. When the sun hit it, the reflection was so bright that it was a constant distraction. Well that and the mixed flock of juncos, white throated sparrows,  song sparrows and chippers. :)

Then all that rain came and the tree is virtually stripped of it's coat of colors but it's not alone, everything around here has shifted to the primary colors of brown, browner and browner. With the clock change tonight it won't bother me so much, it'll be dark when I go to work and dark when I get home.

At this point, I'm looking forward to the snow.
