January musings and a grand day out

It's been an unusual winter in Maine with warm temperatures and a severe lack of snow. While anti-snow lovers are rejoicing I am suffering from reverse Seasonal Depression and was even known to curse the southern half of the Northeast for misunderstanding how lucky they were to get dumped with just shy of 30" of snowy goodness. That's a playground scenario for this girl. As it is right now I'm overlooking my bland back yard, part dead pine needless and ironically - part green grass with patches of snow here and there. It feels like spring with temps in the 40's, there are buds on some trees and the poor chickadees and titmouse are singing their spring songs, which wouldn't be so bad but it's the last day of January. JANUARY. I'm secretly hoping for a repeat of last February where Mother Nature provided us with our normal snowfall amounts in a span of about two weeks. Burnt Meadow Pond - Brownfield, Maine

Out in Brownfield, there isn't really a whole lot. A few ponds, a few mountains, pretty much no cell phone signal, and some dirt roads. What they lack of, they make up for with plenty of trails and bugs and fishing opportunities. We've hiked Burnt Meadow Mountain before, and this time we decided to drop into Burnt Meadow Pond to see how the fishing really is. The pond literally sits in the afternoon shadows of the mountain, directly beneath it and absorbing all the runoff. The water itself was crystal clear and very cold, with some really deep spots and some really shallow spots. It's no wonder the it's filled with such a variety of fish: brown and brook trout, large and smallmouth bass, white and yellow perch, pickerel, minnows, shiners, suckers, hornpout, eels and sunfish. Swan Pond/Swan Creek - Goodwin's Mills, Maine

The Goodwins Mills area is a small community - so small you might miss it if you blink driving along Rt 35 headed towards Afred or Kennebunk. Located half in Dayton, half in Lyman, the area has rich history of being great for farming and having two sawmills in the area - one on Kennebunk Pond, the other on Swan Pond. From what I found, the mill at Swan's Pond was built in 1782 and contained a sawmill and gristmill, and the building and damn still stand there today. We took advantage of the deep water to try some fishing but it was still too early in the season and the fish were very timid - you could see them zinging along the surface but a seen fish will rarely ever bite.
